BIM from 30 Thousand Feet [ext]

As nothing more than a seasoned but provincial Building Modeler, can I really have a bird's-eye view of Building Information Modeling? If I have no direct connection to a university, research institution, or major corporation, have no advanced degree, am not widely traveled, and sit on no Boards of Directors, how can I have such a broad view of such a complex set of issues? I cannot. My main reason for writing here is that there is reason to believe that no one really has that kind of view of this global revolution in design methods. Why not?
